The main activity of the Department
is to undertake research projects and guide researchers
for Ph.D. and M.Phil degrees. The Master’s programme
of the Department was specially designed and started on
UGC guidelines. The curriculum of the M.Sc. course is different
from that of the General M.Sc of the affiliated colleges
under this University. Though the quality of the course
is excellent, the intake of the students is limited to six
per batch. The department intends to increase this number,
provided adequate facilities are made available for this
purpose.
The Department had already trained
over 115 M.Phil and 90 Ph. D candidates till 2005 and the
total out lay of research publications till date exceeds
600. An International Journal, Entomon,
the official organ of the Association for the Advancement
of Entomology (AAE) is published from the Department.
There is a good library with over 3500 volumes and several
scientific journals in the Department. The research laboratories
are fairly well equipped with precision instruments such
as the Scanning Electron Microscope, Spectrophotometers,
Refrigerated High speed Centrifuges, Fluorescence Microscope,
Laminar Flow, Microscopes with image analyzer, oxygraph,
ELISA Reader, HPLC, PCR and accessories, Atomic Absorption
Spectrophotometer, flamephotometers etc.
Inter Departmental Courses
The Department has started a multidisciplinary M.Phil programme
in bioinformatics. The Department also runs extra-departmental
courses such as microscopy, biodiversity, genetics and ecophysiology.
We propose to begin a multidisciplinary inter-institutional
M.Sc integrated programme (B.Sc., M.Sc) in Biosciences jointly
conducted by the Department of Zoology, Biochemistry, Botany
and Computer Science. Further, we propose to start a M.Sc/
M.Tech Duplex degree in Bioinformatics and project it as
a Centre of Excellence in Life Sciences.
